The 200-by-132-foot main gymnasium was sold to the city of Whitney for $1,340, even though it cost $167,000 to build. The gymnasium was purchased to relieve the overburdened local schools. In 1949, the city of Whitney built a 4-grade gymnasium for the public schools, but failure caused the new building to burn down on the second day of school;
The Camp Swift gym would become the school gym used by the Whitney School today. All service men and women must train at Camp Swift. Today, the site is home to part of the Texas National Guard, the University of Texas at Austin, and a federal prison. In the 1970s, Camp Swift also had new development plans to address the environmental impact and development of several lignite mines beneath the camp.
